The SHINE Study

The SHINE Study has concluded and is no longer accepting new participants.

Purpose of the study:

The purpose of the SHINE Study was to learn more about Behavioral Inhibition (a temperament trait similar to shyness) in preschool-age children and its underlying neural activity.

Qualifications:

1. Child enrolled in the study is between the ages of 3-5 years old at time of enrollment

2. Mother enrolled in the study is child's biological mother

3. Child enrolled in the study does not have a developmental disability or neurological disorder

What to expect:

Eligible participants completed two structured lab visits, ideally within a few weeks of one another, and two follow-up assessments completed 6 months and 12 months after the second lab visit. The first lab visit consisted of clinical interviews assessing both parent and child psychiatric history, as well as child temperament. These interviews were completed by a trained experimenter and the mother enrolled in the study. At the second lab visit, mothers and their children engaged in a variety of play-based tasks while wearing NIRS caps. NIRS is a safe and non-invasive form of neuroimaging. Follow-up assessments were completed by the mother enrolled in the study at 6 months-post lab visit and 12 months-post lab visit. These follow-up assessments were the same assessments completed at the first lab visit, and were used to assess the progression of both the mother and the child's psychiatric history. Participants in the SHINE Study were financially compensated for their participation.
