The FAB Study

The FAB Study has concluded and is no longer enrolling new participants.

Purpose:

The purpose of the FAB Study was to learn more about how mother-child relationships are associated with enjoying fun activities, and how these experiences are impacted by maternal depression.

Qualifications:

  1. Child enrolled in study aged 11-14 at time of enrollment
  2. Mother enrolled in study is child's biological mother
  3. Mother enrolled in study has experienced two or more episodes of depression in their lifetime
  4. Mother enrolled in study has not been previously diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder or a psychotic disorder
  5. Mother enrolled in study is not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  6. Child enrolled in study has no history of psychiatric problems
  7. Both mother and child participants are willing and able to undergo multiple fMRI scans

What to expect:

This study involves a telephone screening visit, 2 to 4 in-person study visits, and 6- and 12-month follow-up study questionnaires that can be completed via telephone, internet, or mail. The first in-person visit will take about 4 hours to complete and involves both mothers and children completing interviews and questionnaires about their psychiatric history. The second and third study visits will take place at the Magnetic Resonance Research Center at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and will take about 1.5 hours for each visit. During these visits, mothers and children will separately complete an fMRI scan while completing guessing games and watching video clips. fMRI is a type of brain scan that takes pictures of the brain while people are thinking and looking at different things. The pictures show parts of the brain that are active. fMRI is a painless procedure that does not use radiation, but uses radio waves, a large magnet, and a computer to create images. Mothers and children will also be asked to provide saliva samples for DNA analysis (to learn about genes) and other testing. Participants will be financially compensated for their participation in the FAB Study.
